On the 6th of July the first Doc’s day of the RTG „Genes, Environment and Inflammation“ took place at the “Zentrum Molekulare Biowissenschaften” in Kiel. Twelve doctoral researchers and associated doctoral researchers from Kiel and Lübeck participated in this event. The purpose of this meeting was to have a day of free discussion and confrontation between PhD students only.
The meeting started in the morning with an introduction about the organization of the next RTG international symposium. The group consequently discussed and assigned tasks for the organization of the next symposium.
After a short break, a session of presentations started. Each PhD student presented an aspect of his/her own PhD project in a 5 minutes talk. The students were asked to present not only results, but especially to bring a possible topic of discussion to the group, sharing possible issues, bottlenecks, examples of problem solving or scientific good practice. Indeed, each presentation was followed by a 10-15 minute’s feedback and discussion, in which the group analysed the presented topic with an open mind and a critical point of view. This was very useful and in many cases the students got very meaningful advices and suggestions which will possibly be able to help the course of their research program. Moreover, this was a great possibility to confront the different PhD experiences and statuses and to consolidate team spirit and work. This round of presentations and discussion continued after lunch.
In the late afternoon, the group moved to the “Seebar” at Kiel fjord for a round of person to person discussion about single projects.
We thank the RTG for giving us the possibility of organizing this event and sharing our own experiences and ideas.
