Why this profession?

I am a Professor of Food Science and Director of the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food Science at Kiel University. Prior to my appointment in Kiel, I worked as a Research Associate at the University of California at Berkeley (Department of Molecular and Cell Biology), and was a Lecturer in Molecular Nutrition at the University of Reading (United Kingdom).

I have been a member of the National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) since 2012.
Our main research interests centre on the role of dietary factors in cell signaling, redox-dependent gene expression and healthy ageing. To achieve this goal my group is applying a wide variety of cellular and molecular biology techniques. Ongoing studies include:

a) the transcriptomic response of human endothelium to atherogenic stimuli;

b) molecular mechanism by which plant bioactives protect against cardiovascular disease;

c) antioxidants and differential gene expression in the brain;

d) APOE genotype, oxidative stress, inflammation and disease risk.
