Why this profession?

Physics, chemistry and biology were my major subjects in high school. After graduating I became interested in bioinformatics because I would also gain knowledge in computer science and mathematics. From 2005 to 2009, I studied bioinformatics and got my Bachelor in Technology degree working with Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, India. My major scientific interests were protein modeling, secondary structure prediction, molecular dynamics and simulations. Until 2010, I worked as a project associate in an experimental lab at the Department of Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) where I developed cryo-gelation technology for efficient biomedical implants.

However, I wanted to learn more about computational biology and approaches that combine experimental data with in-silico methods. With an India4EU Erasmus Mundus fellowship from the European Commission, I did my Master's in bioinformatics at the University of Bologna, Italy (2010-2012). In addition to courses in molecular anthropology, bioinformatics for medical genetics, biomedical databases and biophysics, I learned more about biostatistics and improved my programming skills in R and python.  In my Master's project, I developed in-silico drug analogues for diabetes and obesity using chem-informatics.

Why RTG Genes, Environment and Inflammation?

After staying in Italy for 2 years and travelling through different countries, I wished to pursue my doctoral researchers in Europe, and particularly in Germany. This structured PhD programme with a position in the bioinformatics group offers me an excellent opportunity to work on genomic data from new sequencing technologies and to share my expertise with young and motivated scientists in an interdisciplinary research environment. As a member of RTG and the “Inflammation at Interfaces Cluster” I hope to complete my PhD within three years and improve my social and cultural skills by working with people from all over the world.
