Why this profession?

Motivated by a great scientific interest in applied mathematics and medicine, I combined both subjects and studied statistics with subsidiary theoretical medicine at the Universities of Dortmund, Bochum and Sheffield.  After graduating in 1999, I worked with Professor Lutz Dümbgen at the Insitiute of Mathematics at the Medical University of Lübeck on a DFG funded project from which I obtained my PhD thesis entitled "Nonparametric Inference for Interval-Censored Data" in 2003.

Since 2001 I am working at the Institute of Medical Informatics and Statistics at the Christian-Albrechts-University, Kiel (Director: Prof. Dr. M. Krawczak) , where I consult mainly medical and biological scientists on their statistical problems in research. As my interest focused more on genetic studies, I became an associated scientist in the Excellence Cluster Inflammatory at Interfaces at the Institute of Epidemiology (Director: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lieb) and in RTG in 2013.

Why RTG Genes, Environment and Inflammation?

From the statistical point of view analyzing interactions between environment and genetic factors is hugely interesting, as it adds a challenge to modeling procedures and the interpretation of results. However, such a surrounding of highly motivated young academics accompanied by excellent scientists will give a combined knowledge that can lead this challenge and will result in exciting research.
