Both institutions are actively participating in the DFG Excellence Cluster “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation”. A group of scientists working together at these institutions initiated this Research Training Group. Together, they stand for expertise, innovative approaches and the belief that interdisciplinary research will be the most promising.
Since 2020 the doctoral researchers and their supervisors of the DFG Research Unit RU 5042 miTraget "The Microbiome as a Therapeutic Target in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases", speaker: Prof. Dr. Andre Franke, are associated to the RTG 1743.

Students obtain access to a wide variety of different in vitro and in vivo methods and theoretical computational approaches such as subsequent data mining and bioinformatic analyses. Optimal infrastructures are available at the two universities in Kiel and Lübeck, not least the currently built Center of Molecular Life Sciences (“Zentrum für Molekulare Biowissenschaften”, ZMB) and the nationally unique Comprehensive Centers for Inflammation Medicine (CCIM)
For example, the RTG members have access to the following high-throughput platforms:
DNA lab / genexpression / genotyping / sequencing / functional genomics (cell and mouse models) / microbiome lab.
We exchange experiences with the DFG Research Training Group 1727 "Modulation of Autoimmunity" in Lübeck. With regard to the qualification programme we collaborate with the RTGs at Kiel and Lübeck University.
The cities of Kiel and Lübeck are directly located on the Baltic Sea. They offer nice beaches, a bundle of opportunities for sports, as well as a vivid cultural and student life. In 1987, UNESCO, declared the historical city of Lübeck to be a World Cultural Heritage Site.
